Rainy Day Counting Mats

If you're looking for an engaging math activity to present to your preschoolers this spring, look no further! These mats can teach one-to-one correspondence, counting to ten, number recognition, number formation, and even spelling and letter recognition. Since this activity can be prepped in just a few minutes, it's perfect for busy moms/teachers like you!

All you need to do to prepare this activity is print and laminate the pages. Gather some fun counters, gems, or even buttons. And you're all set!

While you don't have to laminate these counting mats, it will make them sturdier and help them stand up to busy little hands. If you prefer not to laminate your mats, you could just slip them into a write and wipe pocket.

There are so many ways to use these mats with your toddlers and preschoolers. They can choose a counting grid to start with. They will identify the number on the top right corner of the mat. Have them use gems or counters to cover the number.

You could also have them trace the number with markers if you'd prefer. Then, they'll use mini-erasers or gems to cover the raindrops at the top of the page and the raindrops in the ten-frame. Have them count aloud as they do this. It will be good practice for little ones.

Another way is to have them use letter magnets or letter beads to spell the number word at the bottom of the page. The goal here is letter recognition, not spelling.
